What is stress and anxiety?

Stress is a general term referring to anything that puts a strain or pressure on your body. It can come from external sources like your work pressure, caring for loved ones, or the weather. Stress can also come from internal sources like worrying about finances, feeling angry, or dealing with a chronic illness.

Stress hijacks your mind and body

Stress triggers your sympathetic nervous system. That’s the system controlling your fight-or-flight-or-freeze response. When you’re stressed, the sympathetic nervous system sends biochemical signals to your heart and brain. 


That’s when:

  • Your heart rate speeds up
  • You start sweating
  • Your muscles tense up
  • You have trouble taking full breaths
  • Adrenaline levels rise
  • Cortisol (the “stress hormone”) levels rise

Stress and disease

Remember how stress shoots your cortisol levels up? One of cortisol’s jobs is to keep inflammation in check and regulate the immune responses. With so much cortisol flooding your body, your tissues become desensitized to it. You may notice allergy symptoms worsening or that you get colds easily and they last longer. In time, a weakened immunity and high inflammation levels put you at higher risk of stress-related diseases including cardiovascular disease, asthma, diabetes, and gastrointestinal issues.

Stress and pain
